How to start poultry from scratch?

Chicken is considered to be the protein that is consumed the highest in the United States of America. Americans consume more chicken than anyone else in the world, about 93 pounds per person per year. Americans also consume 95 million dozen eggs annually. About 18% of poultry meat is exported, making the US the second largest exporter in the world.

According to the United States, broiler, egg, and turkey meat production and chicken sales bought total revenue of US$46.3 billion in 2018, according to the Poultry and Egg Association. According to the National Chicken Council, 95% of broilers are raised by about 25,000 family farmers who contract with about 30 companies. It is reported that there is a huge demand to buy egg-laying chickens in the US.

Poultry is raised in all 50 of her states, with Alabama and Arkansas leading the production of broilers (chickens raised for meat). Iowa is a leader in egg production. North Carolina and Minnesota are leaders in turkey production.

Herds range from large commercial operations to backyard herds. Individual birds are also kept as pets and show birds. Pathogenic-free eggs are bred for medical purposes. Turkey is a Thanksgiving staple. Cows are also kept as after chickens the next high-demand meat is beef, and many farmers are putting up Hereford Cow for sale.

According to a US Environmental Impact Assessment prepared by Iowa State University, researchers attribute increased yields, improved equipment and production processes, improved genetics, and advances in nutrition.

Understanding poultry farming better

Although some turkeys are labeled “vegetarian” on the market today, turkeys are not vegetarian in nature — they grow in the wild and eat beetles and earthworms in addition to plants. Like any livestock industry, turkey farms rely on nutritionists to ensure proper nutrition. Diets vary up to 10-fold over a chicken’s lifetime. As with other animal species, the use of antibiotics requires veterinary supervision, and the administration of poultry hormones and steroids of any kind is illegal.

Broiler farms have worked to improve their image by increasing transparency. Hayden Farms in Kentucky offers a public viewing room where guests can see chickens through glass, as well as a tour of the control room technology and educational facilities. The Kentucky Corn Growers Association and Kentucky Soybean Association supported this effort.

Poultry feeding options

Commercially raised chickens are usually fed a so-called complete diet containing all the protein, energy, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients necessary for proper growth, egg production, and good health of the bird.

A chick is fed a high-protein initial diet immediately after hatch until his 6-8 weeks of age. Then switch to a finisher or developer diet with more energy than protein.  Beans and peas of all types provide excellent protein in a poultry diet but must be processed (roasted or steamed). Raw, unprocessed beans contain enzymes that interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption. Soy is a popular feed ingredient that is readily available and is always processed before being sold as a feed ingredient.

Poultry feed may contain antibiotics and other drugs. Scheduled feeding provides a consistent dose. Coccidiosis is an environmentally difficult disease to control in chickens and adult chickens may develop resistance when exposed to mild cases. , then switch to untreated bait. The treated food should not be fed during the last week before harvest, even if treatment for outbreaks in older chickens is required.

Starting a Poultry Farm is not very difficult if you have a properly well-sanitized place to keep the birds and other animals and provide them with proper food and care.
